The Limerick Tunnel PPP Scheme provides a fourth crossing of the River Shannon in Limerick and completes the Limerick Southern Ring Road connecting the M7 Dublin to Limerick route with the N18/M18 to Galway and linking with the M20 to Cork and N69 to Foynes routes. The project provides a dual carriageway to motorway standard beneath the River Shannon in a 675 metre long tunnel. It represents one of the largest and most complex Civil Engineering projects undertaken in Ireland. The immersed tunnel was constructed in 5 sections in an adjoining casting basin with each then individually floated, warped and immersed in the river.

Having been responsible for design and construction supervision of major elements of the scheme (toll plazas incl. underpasses & administration buildings; environmental works; water supply; major temporary works incl. casting basin) in previous employment at WYG, staff at O'Shea Consulting assisted DirectRoute to close out design approvals with the NRA following the demise of WYG Ireland and now provide ongoing civil, structural, geotechnical and electrical engineering consultancy services in relation to the operation and maintenance of the infrastructure on the scheme.
